Soon it will be two months from the last earthquake, and it is, right now, 7 months from the first one. A look at the www.christchurchquakelive.co.nz graphs show that the number and intensity of the aftershocks this time are much more compressed, time-wise than after the first one. Hence we are feeling even more battered by the bombardment from below! The sewerage system here is under extreme pressure and only working at something like 30% of normal capacity, so all the waterways are polluted with human waste, where once we could be proud that they were so clean.
The city CBD is still largely shut down and inaccessible to the general public. It covers a very large area and the amount of rubble and general devastation is going to take months to clear away. General social services are slowly getting to their feet, but many workers are working from home as their offices are no more or can't be entered.
We at Aspiehelp are in a similar position, but only for about one more month while a pillar in the church above us is strengthened. The rest of the Church and buildings are fine!
People in Christchurch, including Jan and I are suffering from "quake brain", a rather stunned feeling which slows down thought processes and induces the need for a lot of rest! Hopefully this will lessen with time. The latest news is that we might be experiencing aftershocks for another 30 years, so, on that delightful note, I will finish this post!
